§ 26-62. Maintenance, inspection, and testing.

  • The requirements for fire alarm system components, devices, and systems shall be tested, maintained, and inspected using the guidelines set forth in the NFPA guidelines adopted in the Florida Administrative Code ("FAC"), as may be amended. In addition, the following shall apply:

    (a)

    Whenever or wherever any device, equipment, system, condition, arrangement, level of protection, fire-resistive construction, or any other feature is required for compliance with the provisions of the Life Safety Code, and all applicable state requirements and standards, such device, equipment, system, condition, arrangement, level of protection, fire-resistive construction, or other feature shall thereafter be continuously maintained. Maintenance shall be provided in accordance with applicable National Fire Protection Association ("NFPA") 72 requirements or requirements developed as part of a performance-based design approved by the fire chief, or designee, or as directed by the fire chief;

    (b)

    No existing life safety feature in an existing structure shall be removed or reduced where such feature is a requirement for new construction;

    (c)

    Existing life safety features obvious to the public, which are not required by law or the fire chief, shall be either maintained or removed;

    (d)

    Existing life safety features that do not meet the requirements for new structures, but that exceed the requirements for existing structures, shall not be further diminished;

    (e)

    Any device, equipment, system, condition, arrangement, level of protection, fire-resistive construction, or any other feature requiring periodic testing, inspection, or operation to ensure its maintenance, shall be tested, inspected, or operated according to operational guidelines, any applicable law or standards or as directed by the fire chief; and

    (f)

    Maintenance, inspection, and testing shall be performed under the supervision of a responsible person, as defined in F.S. ch. 633, who shall ensure that testing, inspection, and maintenance are made at specified intervals in accordance with applicable NFPA standards or as otherwise directed by the fire chief.
